6 Ways To Be A Healthier, More Organized, Financially Savvy You In 2014

better you pinWhether it is your health, personal finance or just overall well-being, we all have a little room for self improvement this year (well, except Beyonce. That woman is perfect.)

But for the rest of us, here are a few tips on being a better you in 2014.

Minor changes can have the potential to make major improvements and help you become a healthier, more organized and financially saavy version of yourself in 2014.

1. Cook more

Of course, it’s so much easier to just order food or eat our after a long day. But if you plan your meals (and grocery shopping!) in advance and cook on the weekends, you’ll save money and be healthier.

Need some suggestions? The internet is a great resource for quick, go-to meals (check out a starting point here).

Worried about making too much? There’s this nifty invention called the freezer that will take care of any excess. Better yet, take leftovers for lunch the next day. It’s a great way to save $10 (and eat a better balanced meal as well!).

2. Change up your workspace

Changing your work environment (at home or in the office) can refresh your focus and allow for better productivity.

Move your desk or the placement of your computer. Add some picture frames or eliminate clutter if you have too much.

3. Tie up loose ends at the end of the day

If you’re anything like me, when you start work early in the morning, you are a little out of it. Before you leave your office or go to bed, try to get organized for the next day. If you’re taking a lunch, make sure you’ve made it and stashed it in the refrigerator. Lay out your clothing for the following morning. Make a to-do list with your most difficult tasks.

This will allow you to go to bed with a clear head and have a restful sleep.

4. Stop procrastinating

Procrastination can be a real problem for some people so if you want this to be the year that all changes then keep this tips from Executive Coach and Consultant Susan Hosage in mind.

  • Set goals: Hosage says, “Planning your day, week, and month will ensure that you don’t continue to put off your tasks and projects at work. Set interim benchmarks for longer-term assignments to ensure you stay on track.
  • Prioritize: You have to be able to identify what is most important.  If you only do what you enjoy, you are going to be in trouble.
  • Find the low hanging fruit and do that first: It should be obvious. Hosage says, ”Some quick hits to check off your list of things to do will allow you to feel a sense of accomplishment, build momentum, and make the rest of your initiatives seem less burdensome.”

5. Try clean eating – at least some of the time

2014 is going to be all about Clean Eating.

Clean Eating doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to reduce calories. The goal with clean eating is to eat your food in its most natural state. The goal is to get away from artificial chemicals, flavors and preservatives.

According to Southweb.org, this year you’ll see more people following a clean eating approach which means choosing cleaner, leaner meats, low starch vegetables, legumes and nuts, fruit and smart carbs like farro. The best way to do this? Buy local, and cook at home. Worried that you can’t stick to a plan? Try starting slowly – with one or two days a week. You’ll feel better and save money.

6. Add a little Radiant Orchid to your life

Pantone’s color of the year is Radiant Orchid. Try using it as an accent (a pen, bulletin board, notebook, or smartphone case). Because everyone needs a pop of color in their lives.
